Teddy Roosevelt's Library

Clinton's library
[edit]There have been news stories of late mentioning that Clinton's presidential library is now open, after a rain drenched opening cerimony. This seems inconsistent: "The Presidential library system is made up of ten Presidential libraries (see list of U.S. Presidential libraries). Also included in the Presidential library system is the Nixon Presidential Materials Staff, which administers the Nixon Presidential materials under the terms of the Presidential Recordings and Materials Preservation Act, and the William J. Clinton Presidential Materials Project, which administers the Clinton Presidential materials. The William Jefferson Clinton Presidential Library became the eleventh Presidential library on November 18, 2004. The Richard Nixon Library & Birthplace is not officially part of the Presidential library system."

Jefferson Davis
[edit]In my view, the Jefferson Davis Presidential Library does not belong as part of this specific article.
That it this article is properly included in Wikipedia remains beyond question, but any Jefferson Davis' "library" is simply not appropriate for incorporation as a link within this network of federally-funded depositories. If this becomes a matter for further discussion, I would have thought that this page would be a convenient venue for resolving any outstanding questions?. --Tenmei (talk) 20:43, 19 May 2008 (UTC)
- I agree; it would not be appropriate for coverage in this article. It looks like a good candidate for a "See also" entry, though. TJRC (talk) 23:55, 13 January 2009 (UTC)
- Also, to be frank, its doubtful that this is much of a presidential library. There is no doubt that the Museum of the Confederacy should be looked upon as the official Davis presidential library, since it was his executive residence, and more importantly, holds the largest amount of Confederacy correspondence and the like that wasn't acquired by the US government after its collapse. Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library

Obama Library
[edit]I updated the NARA library count to 14 today, as the Archives' website lists Obama's library with an online link. The Archives does currently maintain the document collection, even if there is no physical building as of yet. RM2KX (talk) 14:18, 3 March 2017 (UTC)

Inconsistency
[edit]The first sentence appears to define a "presidential library" as part of "a nationwide network of 13 libraries administered by the Office of Presidential Libraries, which is part of the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA)". However, the "List of presidential libraries" has a table with 44 libraries in it, including those that are not administered by NARA. The article should be made consistent. Criticism
[edit]My understanding is that many historians dislike the Presidential library system because it separates presidential materials from other government documents of the same period. Perhaps this is less important as materials become available digitally, but I wonder if there should not be a section discussing this and perhaps other issues with the system.Bill (talk) 22:50, 6 August 2021 (UTC)

- As best as I can figure, the template automatically generates alt text based on article title and map when no alt-text is provided in the template. I've added alt-text and it seems to have fixed it. Schazjmd (talk) 20:16, 1 June 2022 (UTC)
Page renaming
[edit]I'm gonna be WP:BOLD here and change the name of this page. The current name, "Presidential library" seems to inaccurately reflect the content of the article which is about the "Presidential library system" or could be renamed "Presidential libraries" but is not singular. Therefore I am moving to "Presidential library system but feel free to revert and tell me why I'm wrong, or to change the name to a more WP:COMMONNAME. I am moving this to "Presidential libraries system" instead of singular "Presidential libraries". I will also try to add a redirect but I've never done so before so assistance would be appreciated! - The relevant academic literature that I read referred to the NARA network of libraries as a "presidential library system", but to individual libraries as "Presidential library". Considering that this article is about the collective network, and not just a category or list of individual articles about specific Presidential Libraries, terming it "System" seemed most appropriate to me but it could very well be that I am in error.
